The Secret Life of the Shopping Mall — Trailer (2009)
This movie looks to examine the structure and life of the regional shopping center, and the business of retail — where it has been, some mistakes it has made, and where it might be going as a result of Internet retail. My view is that successful brick-and-mortar establishments, among other things, help to keep urban centers together and help make them lively, interesting, and safe places to exist. And the regional shopping center is the only part of suburbia that is remotely hospitable, being the only place where people are allowed to socialize in mass pedestrian avenues, in an area designed primarily for cars. A depressed mall affects the whole community. Now, with the free exchange of opinion and wealth of knowledge and products the Internet provides, it is becoming (or has become) the main center of activity. It's the world's largest library, the world's most complete shopping district and black market, and the world's most diverse urban avenue. How is the real world to compete with this, and how is it competing? Will our suburbs eventually dissolve while the postwar economy that created them finally grinds to a halt?
